Important notice: Revolut insurance is provided by third-party partner insurers (the insurers vary by country and plan). Always read the full terms and conditions available in the app before relying on cover for a trip or a major purchase. This guide is informational, not insurance advice. If in doubt, consult a broker or read your plan's insurance product information document.

What insurance does Revolut include?

Revolut's insurance offering is built around three main categories, available depending on the plan:

Travel insurance

The most comprehensive and the most valued. It includes (depending on the plan): emergency medical expenses abroad, trip cancellation, lost or stolen baggage, flight delay, personal liability abroad.

Available from the Plus plan (basic cover), full cover from Premium.

Purchase protection

Covers purchases made with a Revolut card against certain risks: theft, accidental damage during a set period after the purchase.

Available from the Plus plan (check for your country).

Phone insurance

Protection for your smartphone against loss, theft and accidental damage (cracked screen, water damage).

Available on the Metal and Ultra plans only.

Standard plan: no insurance included. If you travel on the Standard plan, you have no cover through Revolut. Take out separate travel insurance or consider temporarily upgrading your plan before your trip.

Travel insurance by plan

Travel insurance is the main argument for moving to a paid Revolut plan. Here is the detailed comparison:

Practical analysis by destination

Trips within the EU: the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC, known in France as the CEAM) covers emergency care in EU/EEA countries. Revolut insurance (from Plus) tops up that cover for costs not reimbursed under the EHIC and adds cancellation, baggage and so on. The Plus plan is generally sufficient for Europe.

United States: American medical bills can exceed $100,000 for a serious hospital stay. Check the medical expenses limit of your plan carefully before any trip to the USA. Premium, Metal and Ultra cover emergency medical expenses up to €10,000,000, an adequate level; Plus's basic cover is not.

Asia, South America, Africa: medical costs are generally lower than in North America. The Premium plan is usually adequate for these destinations.

Purchase protection: what it really covers

Purchase protection covers the goods you buy with your Revolut card against certain risks for a set period after the purchase.

What is covered

  • Theft: if the item is stolen shortly after purchase
  • Accidental damage: unintentional breakage in the weeks following the purchase
  • Online purchases not received: in some cases, if the retailer fails to deliver

Limits and timeframes

Purchase protection is generally capped per item and per year. Typical conditions:

  • Cover period: 90 to 180 days after purchase (depending on the plan)
  • Limit per item: from a few hundred to a few thousand euros
  • Annual limit: varies by plan, up to €10,000 a year on Ultra
  • Possible excess: check the conditions

Common exclusions

Purchase protection generally does not cover:

  • Motor vehicles and their accessories
  • Goods bought for professional use
  • Works of art, valuable jewellery, coins and currency
  • Purchases at flea markets or second-hand
  • Normal wear and tear or electronic failures
  • Losses (as distinct from theft)

Phone insurance (Metal and Ultra)

Phone insurance is one of the exclusive perks of the Metal and Ultra plans. It covers your main smartphone against three types of incident:

What is covered

  • Theft: theft with violence or by stealth (pickpocketing)
  • Loss: depending on the conditions, sometimes included, sometimes not
  • Accidental damage: cracked screen, drops, water damage

Eligibility conditions

To be covered by Revolut phone insurance, your smartphone must generally:

  • Have been bought no more than 24 to 36 months before the incident (depending on the plan's conditions)
  • Be registered with the insurer (activation in the app recommended)
  • Be your main personal phone

Limit and excess

The reimbursement limit is generally set at a few hundred euros (€800 to €1,500 depending on the version), with a possible excess of €50 to €100. This limit may be insufficient for high-end smartphones (iPhone Pro Max, Samsung S Ultra), whose price often exceeds €1,000. In that case, dedicated phone insurance (often offered by your mobile operator or your home insurance) may provide better cover.

Is Revolut insurance enough for travelling?

It is the question everyone asks. The honest answer is: it depends. Here is our analysis by scenario:

Short trip in Europe (Premium plan or above)

Generally sufficient

For a weekend in Rome or two weeks in Spain, the Premium plan covers the main risks. The EHIC tops up medical cover within the EU.

Trip to the United States (all paid plans)

Depends on the plan

American medical costs are prohibitive. Plus's basic cover is insufficient for the USA. Premium, Metal and Ultra cover emergency medical expenses up to €10,000,000: an adequate level, provided you read the exclusions and excesses.

Extreme sports (off-piste skiing, skydiving, etc.)

Often insufficient or excluded

High-risk activities are generally excluded or require an extension of cover. Take out specialist insurance (French providers such as Chapka Aventure or AXA Aventure, for example).

Long stay (moving abroad, 3 months or more)

Not recommended on its own

The maximum cover per trip (30 days on Premium and Metal, 90 days on Ultra) makes Revolut insurance unsuitable for long stays. Dedicated expat insurance is needed.

When should you take out separate travel insurance?

We recommend taking out dedicated travel insurance (in France, for example Chapka, AXA Voyages or Europ Assistance) in these situations:

  • Trips to the United States, Canada or any country with high medical costs, if you are on Plus
  • Risky sports or intensive adventure activities
  • Stays of more than 30 consecutive days (90 days on Ultra)
  • Travellers with pre-existing medical conditions (often excluded)
  • High-risk business travel
  • Situations where Revolut's limits are clearly insufficient

How to activate and use your Revolut insurance

Contrary to popular belief, Revolut insurance does not need to be manually activated for the basic benefits: they are automatically included in your plan. Here, however, are the steps to follow to be well prepared:

Check that your plan includes insurance

App → Profile → My plan → Included benefits. Check which benefits are active on your current plan.

Read the conditions before the trip

App → Profile → Insurance → Insurance product information document. Pay particular attention to the exclusions and limits. 10 minutes before departure can save you some unpleasant surprises.

Keep all supporting documents

In the event of a claim, you will need: tickets (plane, train), purchase invoices, receipts for medical expenses, a police report in case of theft, medical certificates. Photograph them and keep them in the cloud.

If something happens: make a claim via the app without delay

App → Profile → Help → Insurance → Make a claim. Respect the claim deadlines set out in the terms and conditions. A claim made late may be refused.

Follow up your claim with the partner insurer

After the initial claim in the app, you will be put in touch with Revolut's partner insurer for your country. Your claim is then handled directly with that insurer.
